The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight. Prize her highly, and she will exalt you; she will honour you if you embrace her.

Proverbs 4:7-8

Get Wisdom (2)

Our church has just started a WhatsApp group and on the first morning Jimmy Hughes, one of our deacons, posted this hymn to all of us. How lovely and honest! How transparent, yet how serious! I have found it a very helpful model and hymn.

“It was originally written in the Travelodge near Marylebone Station in June 2016. As I woke up at 4.30 am. I instinctively reached for my phone and wasted a good 30 minutes on games and social media. When I checked the time, I realised how much I had wasted. That’s when I went to the Bible, prayer and then wrote this hymn.

Lord, as day begins to break,
And from slumber I awake,
Keep distractions far away,
With you let me start the day.

So much here to waste my time,
So much choice of idle crime,
Worthless games, pointless debate,
All my feeble will await.

Help me make a better choice,
Help me listen for your voice.
As I study in your word
Let your will for me be heard.
As I offer up my prayer
And commit things to your care,
Lord, be pleased to draw near me,
Ready for the day I'll be.

Passing pleasures left behind
As your word renews my mind.
As your presence warms my soul
And fills in that God shaped hole.

Why not use this as a prayer - even a hymn - you can sing it to the tune of…"St Bees" as in the hymn "Hark, my soul, it is the Lord" (if you're uncertain of the tune. It's on the Christian Hymns App.)

Let’s get wisdom and understanding - this morning, today, and tomorrow and every tomorrow!!
